Model Light is an installation consisting of three parts, which are revealed to the viewer one by one and eventually end up constituting a whole.
Part one: Detail photo’s of installation..
Looking for depths, revealing textures
giving an experience, creating an atmosphere
Light as an actor
In the narrative of light and shadow
Light that illuminates, guides, fades out,
reflects, disappears, connects, …
So spaces can be uncovered, defined, showed, suggested, …
Part two: soot painting
Fusion of space and light fixture.
A passage is formed by round openings. Adding a light fixture can affect a space and create a new layer. The shape language of the circle is repeated in the passage by a series of light fixtures swinging in a playful but very precise way. It is a search for the right atmosphere and a balance between natural and artificial light.
It is not just about presenting a fixture. The work of art tries to create a poetic balance between a purified architectural shape language where a light fixture is intertwined in a harmonic way causing the space to take on its own identity.
The creative process in combination with the volatility of the flame with which the image is formed, creates a sequence of images by creating light on the burned cardboard. Light is the intangible building block to create the image.
Part 3: installation with round disc and 2 light fixtures suspended in a space.
‘Model light’ is a spatial installation that combines light, space and design.
A composition of materials is nourished together on a substrate. Normally, a horizontal plane is used where volumes rise upon. Here the assembly of materials is suspended, making it a sculpture, an object, such as a light fixture, hanging from the ceiling. There is no longer a hierarchy between the light fixture and the space it illuminates, everything is aligned and becomes equal.
The sculpture of materials can be seen as a setting for the light. By connecting the materials to the light, the abstraction that was there gradually wins in shape and depth.
By isolating small fragments without any context, there is no longer a perception of scale. This way, the composition can suggest spaces with light as a carrier. The fragments result in a series of pictures that are graphical, tactical, atmospheric and spatial.
All kind of materials on round wooden pannel (diameter 1m) and soot on white paper.
