Helene Petite
Brussel, Belgium
Hélène Petite lives and works in Brussels. With a degree in visual arts from LUCA School of Arts and trained in book and paper design, she is also a photography teacher.
Hélène Petite's work questions the expression of time in landscape photography. The elements that interest her are physical witnesses to temporality: trees, rocks, mountains, moss and lichen, plants, caves. A long process of alteration and recreation of the content, involving gesture, manual labour and studio time, thickens the layers of time that coexist and directs the original element towards a sculptural perspective.
Through collage, edition and shaping the prints, the artist explores the human intervention that creates collective representations of the landscape. By experimentally decomposing and recomposing landscape elements, she renews the representation of nature in photography and inspires a new definition of the relationship between humans and the landscape.
Her work has been featured in numerous exhibitions in Belgium: at Iselp in Brussels, at Musée de la Boverie in Liège, and BPS22 in Charleroi; in France, notably at the Salon a ppr oc he in Paris and at the Centre Bang in Chicoutimi, Quebec. She was published by CFC Editions in 2020 and a first self-published work, entirely handmade and limited to 100 copies, Exhaling, accompanies a new long-term project based on a 36-frame film of a single tree.
