Inside Sara Delesie’s art studio: ‘This really is my happy place. A place to play, create and get into the flow.’

‘I attended art school for three years, but looking back, I left too soon. I’ve always struggled with school, with having to conform to a system. I felt too much pressure. After that, I bought my own potter’s wheel and a small kiln and started experimenting further at home. I had the technical basics, and I then began to play around with them in complete freedom.

My work is very earthy, playful and created in complete freedom. Pieces to cherish every day, to hold, to feel. Tableware that allows you to sink into the moment, into your body. Away from perfection, because what is that anyway? I experiment with different types of clay and glazes. Over the years, a signature has developed quite organically that makes my work truly my own. I work very much by instinct. It’s a game, a collaboration between the clay and myself.’

‘My studio really is my happy place. A place to play, create and get into the flow. Built entirely out of wood, in the garden, surrounded by flowers and greenery. A place where it feels free, peaceful and simply wonderful to be.’

'You’ll find my studio in the garden. I love being able to work and create from home. Over the years, I’ve worked on building sites, during renovations, in a shabby garden shed, in family attics, and in the garage. Five years ago, we built a proper studio in the garden. I’m so happy with it and never want to leave.

I usually start around 9 o’clock. First I clear the shelves, then I can start throwing. My lovely Andreas gets up early to prepare the clay: weighing and kneading it. He keeps the studio running, I do the throwing. He also sands, glazes, fills and empties kilns. Meanwhile, I glaze another collection. And then there’s tidying up, recycling clay and a thousand other things I’ve forgotten now. A clay studio is chaos. But there’s order within that chaos, and that’s important to me. I love it when things have their proper place, so I can work efficiently.’
