Veldwerk #10: Harvesting at the Farm (Volle Grond, Antwerp)
On Saturday, September 19, we’ll head up to the roof for a session at the PAKT rooftop farm Volle Grond in Antwerp. This unique urban agriculture project is located on the roofs of former industrial warehouses. With an area of 1,800 m², it’s the largest rooftop farm in the Benelux. There you’ll find vegetables, fruit, herbs, edible flowers, ducks, and chickens, as well as surprising experiments, such as growing crops on hay. In this shared garden, it’s not just about the harvest, but above all about experiencing, learning, and experimenting together.
At this inspiring green space in the heart of the city, we’ll draw together under the guidance of artist Zita Coltura. In her own work, vegetables play a stunning leading role.
Veldwerk #11: At the Bakery (ExtraBrood, Wielsbeke)
On Thursday, November 5, open your sketchbook among flower-adorned tables and proofing baskets in the workshop of ExtraBrood Bakery in Wielsbeke. On Thursday mornings, the place is a hive of activity. Amid impressive racks, you’ll see bakers Tijs and Louise kneading dough, shaping loaves, and preparing for the day’s baking. In this bakery studio, everything revolves around sourdough: each dough undergoes a slow, natural process, allowing flavors to mature and creating the very best bread. Artist Alice Vanderschoot will guide you through some warm-up drawing exercises, after which you can continue drawing on your own. She herself likes to incorporate the various meanings of food into her sculptures. Is your mouth watering yet? Then there are delicious samples from the bakery, along with hot coffee or tea.
Veldwerk #12: Let’s eat! (Hof van Busleyden, Mechelen)
On Sunday, November 22, we’ll be sitting down to a lavishly set table in the museum studio at Hof van Busleyden in Mechelen. In the exhibition “Bourgondisch tafelen (Burgundian Feasting),” you’ll discover how people ate and drank in the Low Countries during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries: from lavish banquets in city palaces to steaming kitchens filled with cooks and kitchen maids. After an inspiring museum visit, we’ll “feast”—but with our pencils and markers, using a table full of delicacies as our model. After drawing, we’ll enjoy a delicious meal together, like true Burgundians. A sketchbook full of drawings and a full stomach: that’s how you could sum up this session.
Artist Sarah De Zutter will help you get started with warm-up exercises, practical tips, and personalized feedback. She always brings her sketchbook to restaurants, so she knows better than anyone how to bring food to life on paper.
