Claudia Hendzel

Herentals, België

I make things slowly.

In my studio, I print, draw and write by hand, drawn to old ways of making images — to carved lines, scratched plates, ink, paper and the traces left by the process. Mezzotint, with its deep blacks and patient, almost obsessive craftsmanship, holds a particular magic for me.

Old books, forgotten images, folklore, history and philosophy feed my imagination. I am interested in what survives through time: stories, symbols, fears, beauty and the strange things we carry with us.

Animals and curious figures often enter my work, somewhere between memory and invention, tenderness and darkness.

I don’t want to explain everything. I like an image to keep a little of its mystery — and to leave the door open for another story.
