MARTIN REYES NAYRA

Nayra Martín Reyes (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 1979) is a multifaceted artist whose chosen media are painting and performance. In the last period, working on the borderline that separates the suggestive from the erotic, she has focused especially on the representation of the vulva, offering an immediate and impertinent vision of the understanding of female sex. Her instinctive and spontaneous approach to painting, the use of dense and vivid colours, layered in a material rendering, the free association of images of vegetables with anatomical images, reveal her aim of breaking down the stereotype of the female body as a body with a predominantly sexual characterisation. A new iconography that, by investigating the theme of being female in the 21st century, attempts to evade the sense of shame that women have always felt about their sexuality, their bodies and their genitals. A feeling amplified in the context of a male-dominated society that has constantly subordinated their role in the social context.
