Travelling Blue
Travelling Blue brings together three ceramic works made while I was learning Delft Blue painting in the Netherlands: a windmill landscape, two swans on water, and a floral vase.
As a Taiwanese artist whose visual language has been shaped by Chinese ink painting and calligraphy, I expected Delft Blue to feel like a distinctly Dutch tradition. Instead, painting it produced an unexpected sense of recognition. Delftware itself developed through centuries of encounter with Chinese blue-and-white porcelain. Working with blue pigment on ceramic therefore placed me inside a history that had already travelled between cultures long before I did.
The clay objects became small meeting places between inherited and acquired ways of seeing. Dutch windmills and waterways entered the same hand that normally paints with ink; floral motifs seemed simultaneously familiar and newly encountered.
These works reflect the quiet happiness of discovering that cultural traditions do not simply belong to one place: they travel, change, and can eventually become part of who I am.
