Royal Catch
In Royal Catch, we see a shrimp fisherman walking along the shoreline, leading his horse by hand. The horse carries the traditional baskets associated with the centuries-old practice of horseback shrimp fishing. Sitting on the horse’s back is the Shrimp Queen: an exceptionally large, almost mythical shrimp that transforms the familiar coastal scene into something unexpected and narrative-driven.
The linocut — executed as a relief print — is printed in a blue tone, giving the work a strong graphic presence. The yellow watercolor ink of the fisherman’s jacket creates a bright, warm contrast that brings the figure forward. The combination of expressive lines, subtle color accents, and Canson paper enhances the tension between tradition and imagination.
Royal Catch shows how an everyday ritual of the horseback shrimp fishermen can suddenly shift into a scene that feels almost legendary.
