Sam Vanoverschelde (BE, °05/05/73 - Dixmude) is a director (Master in Audiovisual Arts - RITCS, 1997) and visual artist that kicked off in the VJ and live AV scene with the Visual Kitchen collective. Playing the underground scene as well as the established events, Visual Kitchen also explored the experimental classical music world transforming musical scores from the likes of Xenakis, Stockhausen, Berio, Harvey or Feldman into imagery. He took part in producing the Cimatics festival, presenting the up and coming AV and digital arts scene to the Brussels public (2003-2011). In 2008, Sam teamed up with director Davis Freeman and they’ve been regularly working together ever since, making devious political and documentary theatre.
Being born in the WW1 battlefields area he collaborated on the commemoration events with GoneWest(2014-18) and set up projects exploring history as a research base. With a family history linked to the Flemish nationalist movement during WW1, he’s regularly engaged in that historical field, as a board member of the Museum aan de IJzer but also as a director for projects in that domain: he builds bridges in time to modern themes like identity, ecology an ideology.
Lately, it’s been all about ‘the archive’: researching how old and new stories can be told straight from those boxes. Organising his work in ‘the Archive of Untold Stories’ or exploring the contemporary issues on climate and society with ‘the Extinction Survival Archive’. Turning more and more to collaborative and participatory projects, he’s always on the lookout for new ways to explore and connect, activate and protest.
He lives and works in Molenbeek, Brussels. Oh, and he can spin some nice tunes as well…
